(haha - more on that later :)
This is the first piece I made for a three-part Halloween wall hanging. I was inspired by some cute holiday pillows offered by Factory Direct Craft.com (as of this posting one is not sold out so you can see the link/photo)
For this Candy Corn applique you will need:
1 - sheet each of Eco-fi felt - black, orange, yellow and white
1 - orange embroidery floss and needle
- orange sewing thread
- batting
The crafty scoop:
1. Fold the black sheet of felt in half width-wise and cut in half.
2. Take that piece and fold in half and cut.
3. Cut out 2 pieces of batting - smaller than black felt - approx. 4 3/4"x 5 1/2".
(** update** I had the batting measurements wrong in original post. )
4. Draw freehand (or find a pattern you like) of candy corn.
5. Now... having messed with this the easiest thing to do is cut the pattern in 3 pieces and trace each piece on the correct color. (and yes, I had to google candy corn so I could make sure I got the color order correct - haha!) Trim as necessary.
6. Thinly glue down the 3 pieces on your black felt, centering them. (I originally just was lightly glueing them down but had to add more glue so the pieces wouldn't shift when machine sewing. So cover the entire piece with glue, but thinly.)
7. Top stitch around each piece but do not backstitch.
8. With all the loose strings, take a needle and thread them through (you can do two at a time) and pull to the back. Tie all loose ends on back into a knot. Trim
9. Secure batting with pins as well as black felt (I found out :) and use embroidery floss to blanket stitch closed.
10. NOW... here's where I goofed! (not to mention the candy corn isn't perfectly perfect-haha!) Don't stitch the entire square closed! I should have left a spot open in the seam so I could add a ribbon to hang this. Actually, two spaces as I am hanging them in a vertical trio! Oops! I will have to go back and figure out a way to stuff and secure a ribbon in it.
Well, that's me and crafting!! Happy {almost} Halloween!
